You Eat Well, You Exercise – So Why Isn’t It Working?

By 11 August 2025No Comments

You’re doing the right things.

The workouts. The smoothies. The supplements. Saying no to food you love in the quest for a better body. You’ve read the books, listened to podcasts, maybe even tracked your macros or logged your sleep with a smart ring.

But still… something’s off.

You’re bloated more than you used to be. Your energy dips around mid-afternoon. Your skin breaks out at odd times. The scale doesn’t move, or it moves in the wrong direction. And somewhere deep down, it doesn’t make sense.

We know how hard it can be for people to piece things together, and it’s soul-destroying when you’re doing your best, doing so many good things and not getting the desired results.

We also know you’re not lazy. It’s not that you are lacking motivation or willpower. When you’re struggling like this to create the health, wellness and body you want, the issue isn’t you: it’s biology.

Your inputs are good. But something’s blocking the outcome.

This is the most common frustration we hear from women at The HVN: “I take care of myself. I try really hard. But I still don’t feel like myself.”

And when we look deeper, we almost always find that the strategy isn’t wrong — it’s just incomplete.

What do we mean by this? Often, many of the strategies you use daily may work normally, but if your underlying biology is out of sync due to unnoticed imbalances, even the best protocols and plans can fall short.

Genuinely: it’s not your fault.

So, what might be going on beneath the surface?

Let’s break down a few of the most common hidden blocks we see in our hard-working, female clients:

1. Gut Dysregulation

One of the most critical hidden barriers to success is digestion.

The gut isn’t just a digestive organ—it’s a command centre for the body. A disrupted microbiome, low stomach acid, sluggish enzymes, or intestinal permeability can silently impair nutrient absorption, hormone balance, detoxification, mental health and metabolism(Bowe, Patel et al. 2014, Fasano 2020, Ilchmann-Diounou and Menard 2020, Mitrea, Nemes et al. 2022, Kharrazian, Herbert et al. 2023).

When this happens, women can experience everything from persistent bloating and stubborn fat to skin issues, PMS, fatigue, and anxiety. And it can feel deeply frustrating—because on the surface, blood tests with their GP might still come back “normal.”

The microbiota plays a central role, too. These bacteria aren’t just passengers in our bodies. Through many pathways, they influence factors such as estrogen metabolism, immune health, food reactivity, and the brain(Cryan, O’Riordan et al. 2019). An imbalance in this microbial ecosystem—called gut dysbiosis—can quietly contribute to inflammation, water retention, food intolerances, and mood swings.

At The HVN, we take this seriously. We run advanced functional testing to uncover hidden gut issues. Then we build a personalised plan to heal, rebalance, and rebuild from the inside out. This matters because vitality isn’t about restriction. It’s about absorption, harmony, and restoring the rhythm between body and brain. And when a woman’s gut health is optimised, everything else—weight, energy, confidence, and clarity—can start to fall into place.

2. Hormonal Imbalance

Many of the women we see at The HVN arrive feeling like something’s off, but they can’t quite name it. In many cases, the root issue is hormonal—not in the extreme medical sense that often gets flagged in a doctor’s clinic, but in the subtle, cumulative imbalances that come from modern life.

Cortisol is a big culprit here that is rarely measured in standard blood tests. High stress, poor sleep, chronic low-grade inflammation, overtraining, undereating, environmental toxins, and blood sugar instability can all disrupt the delicate hormonal rhythm that governs a woman’s body(Mancini, Di Segni et al. 2016, Elliott-Sale, Tenforde et al. 2018, Osei, Block et al. 2022, Sinha, Prakash et al. 2023).

When that rhythm goes, so does hormonal balance. Chronically elevated cortisol can blunt progesterone and, therefore, cause estrogen to become dominant or erratic. Thyroid function slows. Insulin becomes less sensitive. The body shifts from a state of adaptability to one of resistance, with longer-term implications for poor health (Herrera, Nielsen et al. 2016, Hamidovic, Karapetyan et al. 2020). The term for this hormonal shift is often called “cortisol steal”.

At The HVN, we don’t guess—we test. We know you have the answers inside you; we just need the correct information to help you. Our functional assessments give you the clarity you need to take control of each part of your lifestyle, knowing that what you are doing is right for you now.

3. Overlooked Stress Physiology

In our experience, cumulative stress significantly affects women’s capacity to get results. At The HVN, we look at stress differently from others. We don’t see stress as just a mental and emotional phenomenon.

We examine it from a modern scientific perspective, which demonstrates that there are many sources of stress you encounter daily (physical, mental, emotional, and environmental), and your brain and nervous system must adapt to the cumulative load imposed on you, not merely stress within the mind. In the research, this is called allostatic load (McCrory, McLoughlin et al. 2023).

This means that you might feel generally positive and calm — but your system could still be in overdrive. In other words, you can be doing everything “right” — but if your nervous system hasn’t had a chance to reset, you may not feel the benefits. That’s why we capture specific lab diagnostics and digital tools (not available on the market) to understand how well you adapt to ongoing stress to get the best and fastest results.

This is why we test. This is why we personalise.

At The HVN, we don’t guess. We investigate. We get the right data to give you a complete picture of your needs and then turn that information into a simple, practical plan that works with your lifestyle.

You don’t need the latest influencer trend. You need a personalised plan built around you and for you. Sometimes, it’s about removing the hidden block, not adding more to your already full routine.
